Title: Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar: The Architect of India’s Constitution and Champion of Social Equality Faces Growing Opposition – A ReflectionIndia, a nation celebrated for its unity in diversity, is currently navigating a troubling phase. Over the past 14 years, there has been a disturbing rise in opposition to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, a champion of social equality, and a messiah for the marginalized and oppressed. This opposition, sometimes overt and sometimes veiled, is not only condemnable but also raises serious questions about the social and moral foundations of the country. It compels us to ponder: Where is India’s social fabric headed? The Legacy of the Constitution’s ArchitectOn January 26, 1950, India’s Constitution came into effect, a document unparalleled in its scope worldwide. It is not merely a legal framework but a philosophy embodying social equality, liberty, and fraternity. Dr. Ambedkar’s role in its creation is undeniable. He not only advocated for the rights of Dalits and the oppressed but also envisioned equal rights for people of every religion, caste, gender, and region, translating this vision into the Constitution. No other constitution in the world embraces such diversity while symbolizing unity. Yet, why is the architect of this Constitution facing opposition today?Rising Opposition: Causes and MotivesIn recent years, particularly under the current government’s tenure, instances of opposition to Dr. Ambedkar have surged. A notable example is the statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament: “Instead of chanting Ambedkar’s name, remember God.” This remark not only hurt the sentiments of Dalits and marginalized communities but also raised the question: Can a person holding a constitutional office make such a comment? This statement disrespects not only Ambedkar’s legacy but also the Constitution he crafted. Moreover, social media and public platforms have witnessed increasing attempts to malign Ambedkar’s image through misinformation. Some try to confine him to the label of a “Dalit leader,” ignoring the reality that Ambedkar presented an inclusive and progressive vision for all of India. This opposition is not merely personal but targets the ideology of equality and social justice he championed.Caste Discrimination: A Harsh RealityDr. Ambedkar fought relentlessly against caste discrimination and untouchability during his lifetime. His efforts led to Article 17 of the Constitution, which declared untouchability illegal. Yet, in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, reports of discrimination against Dalits and communities deemed “untouchable” remain rampant. From temple entry to access to water wells, Dalits continue to face humiliation and violence. This situation mocks the Constitution’s promise of equality.Shockingly, some individuals who earn their livelihood through the legal system and take oaths under the Constitution do not hesitate to speak against Ambedkar. This duplicity not only questions their intentions but also reveals how deeply rooted casteism remains in society. The Prime Minister’s Silence: A Pressing QuestionPrime Minister Narendra Modi often highlights his OBC background and commitment to uplifting marginalized communities. However, when members of his cabinet or party leaders make controversial remarks against Ambedkar, his silence is deafening. This silence not only emboldens disrespect toward Ambedkar but also disappoints millions who see him as an inspiration. The Dream of Equality: Why Does It Remain Unfulfilled?Ambedkar envisioned an India free from discrimination based on caste, religion, or gender. Yet, even today, upper-caste individuals often consider themselves superior. It is ironic that when blood is needed, no one questions its caste, but in social interactions, the same old prejudices prevail. If Ambedkar Were Alive Today…Had Dr. Ambedkar been alive today, he would likely be pained to see that while his Constitution is revered, its spirit remains unfulfilled. He would witness Dalits and marginalized communities still relegated to the fringes, with injustices against them growing rather than diminishing. He might question the forces obstructing the pursuit of equality. The Way ForwardTo counter the rising opposition to Dr. Ambedkar and realize his dreams, society and the government must work together. Here are some suggestions:Education and Awareness: Schools and colleges should teach Ambedkar’s ideas and the spirit of the Constitution to foster a generation free from caste prejudice.Strict Legal Action: Swift and stringent action must be taken against atrocities targeting Dalits and marginalized communities.Political Accountability: Leaders and ministers must demonstrate respect for Ambedkar and the Constitution, with immediate action against controversial statements.Social Dialogue: Promote dialogue between different castes and communities to foster mutual understanding and brotherhood.ConclusionDr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is not merely a person but an ideology. Opposing him is not just an insult to his legacy but to the dream of an India rooted in equality and justice. It is time for us to unite against this growing opposition and work toward realizing Ambedkar’s vision. As he once said, “Unless you achieve social liberty, the liberty provided by law is of no use.” Let us take steps toward that social liberty to make India truly Ambedkar’s India.
